Apparently I picked the wrong time to moveYesterday's NYTimes article on how great Portland is for foodies. As a native Portlander, I find the tone slightly condescending, with the suggestion that Portland had a small, underground foodie culture that only blossomed in the last couple of years due to an influx of young chefs from other states. Many of the upscale restaurants mentioned in the article (like Wildwood and Paley's Place) have been popular for more than 10 years, and there's been a long appreciation of outstanding cheap food (think Nicholas, La Sirenita).
But there's no denying Portland has changed dramatically since I left two years ago; my housemate's traveling there soon and showed me a list of restaurants and clubs he's planning to visit, and half didn't exist in 2005. Hopefully I'll still be able to afford the real estate there when I graduate.
